The Benefit of Practicing in Order

Yoga has eight limbs. They are not a menu. They are a sequence, and the sequence has a reason: yama, niyama, asanas, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, samadhi. Each limb prepares the ground for the one that follows. 3Y Yoga follows this deliberately.

Why order protects the student. Reaching for the interior practices before the outer groundwork is laid is like entering university without attending elementary school. Without the prior disciplines, the mind is fertile soil with no structure. What it produces tends to be elaborate, convincing, and unstable — pseudo-mysticism, and a dangerous one.

Why order makes progress concrete. Each limb is something that can be practiced, observed, and measured. Progress is not a feeling. It is a state that was not there before and now is.

Why order keeps yoga honest. Without sequence, practice can become whatever the practitioner decides it should be. Order is the safeguard — not as a cage but as a mirror. If you are at stage three, the work of stage three is what is in front of you, regardless of what you would prefer to be doing.
